Nwankwo’s First Half Explosion Carries Highlanders to Easy Win

NEWARK, NJ – Sophomore forward Uju Nwankwo scored 14 of her career-high 16 points in the first half and grabbed10 rebounds, leading the NJIT women's basketball team to an easy 88-28 victory over Houston Baptist in Great West Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Estelle & Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
 
The victory was the second straight for the Highlanders, who improved to 11-15 overall and 5-4 in the league. The 11 wins ties the Division I program record with victories in a season.  NJIT, who began Division I competition in 2006-07, posted 11 wins in 2009-10, under head coach Margaret McKeon. 
 
Houston Baptist falls to 1-21 overall and 0-6 in the Great West.
 
After a scoreless three minutes to start the game, the Highlanders took firm control of the game, scoring the game's first 18 points. They scored five points in a span of five seconds, courtesy of a three-point field goal by freshman guard Sarah Olson and a steal and a layup from freshman guard Alyssa Albanese.
 
The Huskies didn't get on the scoreboard until the 13:10 mark on three-pointer from Tayler Jefferson.
 
NJIT held the Huskies to just 17 percent shooting from the floor in the first half, grabbing a commanding 51-11 halftime lead.
 
Other than Nwankwo's dominating performance, the Highlanders received 14 points from junior guard Rayven Johnson, who had 10 of her points in the first half. Johnson also grabbed nine rebounds.
 
Five players reached double figures for the home team. Junior guard Jelena Zoric matched her career-high 12 points, freshman center Nicole Maticka, who had two more blocks pushing her single-season record to 68, a new NJIT school record, finished with 10 points.
 
Newcomer Martina Matejcikova, a freshman forward posted a career-high 10 points followed by freshmen guards Olsen and Denisa Domiterova, who each had six points.  All 11 Highlanders scored at least two points in the game.
 
Houston Baptist was led by Joselyn Pugh, the lone Husky to score in double-digits, finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
 
NJIT will break and return to action on Sunday, February 26 at 2pm and host Longwood in a non-conference game at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
