WAYNE, NJ—With three school records broken in the first meet of the season, NJIT swam past William Paterson in a 132.5-97.5 victory in the 2012 season opener for both teams Wednesday.
Freshman
Richard Seffrin started off the meet with a record setting first place finish in the 1000 freestyle of 10:14.92; breaking the old record by 50 seconds.
Freshman
Brian Capozzola finished first in the 50 freestyle with a record breaking time of 22.07; the broken record was held by Senior
Shawn Bryan. Capozzola later in the 200 freestyle relay re-broke his record with a lead off split of 22.03.
In the 500 freestyle, freshman
Jonathan Drori broke the school record, also held by Bryan, with a first place finish time of 5:08.05.
NJIT took first place in 9 separate events, including the three record breaking finishes.
Freshman
Dennis Popov placed first in the 100 butterfly (56.40) and 200 IM (2:07.93). In the 200 IM, Popov, Drori (2:08.42), and freshman
Hanson Tran (2:17.17) recorded a 1-2-3 finish.
Senior
Shawn Bryan finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.39) and second in the 100 freestyle (50.28) behind Capozzola who finished with a 48.23. Seffrin also complimented his meet a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.48). Junior
Victor Razuk recorded two second place finishes in both the 200 freestyle (1:58.51) and 100 butterfly (58.79).
The Highlanders took first in the last event of the night, the 200 freestyle relay. The relay consisting of Capozzola, freshman Gabriel Moffit, Popov, and Bryan finished with a time of 1:32.98.
