Janet Snell and freshman
Danica Vukotic each notched 13 kills as the Highlanders swept visiting Saint Peter's, 3-0, Tuesday evening at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
NJIT (7-11) snapped a two-match losing streak taking the Peacocks, 25-16, 25-15, 25-7 while Saint Peter's falls to 1-19 on the season.
NJIT's Snell posted her 10
th double-double of the season sharing match-high honors with Vukotic with 13 kills and 12 digs. Snell hit .355 for the match on 31 swings and just two errors in the sweep.
Vukotic was two digs shy a double-double adding 13 kills and eight digs. Vukotic hit .455 on 22 attempts with three errors.
Middle
Valerie Carroll combined for a .583 hitting percentage posting a season-high eight kills on 12 attempts with just one error.
Senior setter
Anna Mercado piled up 39 assists while libero
Renata Pandolfo produced a match-high 21 digs followed by 12 from Snell and 11 from
Camilla Tinari.
The Highlanders held an 8-2 service ace advantage led by
Katie Goswick with three and two aces apiece from Mercado and Snell.
Saint Peter's was led by Lauren Behrens who posted six kills and eight digs. Kristina Baehr notched 11 assists and libero Jenny Pliska dug-up 17. Laura Reinhart and Behrens each added eight digs for Saint Peter's.
In the first frame, the home team jumped out to a 14-9 lead – with points 13 and 14 coming from kills by Snell. The Peacocks rallied back to within three of NJIT, 16-13 after an NJIT attack error. NJIT would then score the next five-points for a 20-14 lead resulting in a Peacock timeout. The home team finished off the set on a 5-2 run for a 25-16 victory.
NJIT took an 8-3 advantage in the second frame and used a 12-5 run to extend the Highlander lead to 20-8 after a kill by Vukotic. The Highlanders cruised to a 25-15 victory in the second frame led by Snell's six kills.
The Highlanders had the best hitting percentage in the final set hitting .375 with 14 kills, two errors on 32 swings. NJIT took control early once again taking a 10-3 lead and then took a 17-6 advantage after a Saint Peter's service ace. NJIT closed out the set on an 8-1 run for a 25-7 win.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday, October 6 at 12pm (CT) when the Highlanders travel to Great West Conference opponent Chicago State. The Highlanders are 0-2 in conference play while the Cougars stand at 0-1.
