Women’s Basketball Preview vs. Utah Valley

NJIT looks to bounce back in the win column on Saturday at 2pm at the Fleisher Athletic Center when the Highlanders host Utah Valley in Great West Conference action … Saturday will also be Alumnae Day.
 
The Highlanders (8-12, 2-1 in Great West) are coming off a 65-55 defeat to North Dakota Thursday evening suffering the team's first conference loss.  Freshman Nicole Maticka led NJIT with 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
 
Maticka, who holds the NJIT Division I single-season record with 53 blocks, ranks 19th in the nation with 2.6bpg.  The center is averaging 5.7ppg and 4.7rpg.
 
NJIT is paced by junior Rayven Johnson, the only player on the NJIT roster averaging double-digits with 11.2ppg.  She also leads the team with 148 rebounds (7.8rpg) and 22 steals.  Johnson, who was named Great West Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday, was coming off back-to-back double-doubles in Texas but was held to only five points and eight rebounds on Thursday against North Dakota.
 
Freshman Denisa Domiterova is averaging 8.9ppg while shooting 34 percent from behind the arc (45-131) and classmate Sarah Olson follows with 8.0ppg while shooting 72 percent from the free throw line (28-39).
 
Sophomore Uju Nwankwo is shooting close to 50 percent from the field (59-122) and ranks second on the team in two categories – 6.2rpg and 33 total blocks.
 
Last season, the teams split with NJIT taking a 55-52 victory in Orem, Utah and the Wolverines returned the favor in Newark by a score of, 67-50.  Utah Valley leads the all-time series, 8-4.
 
Utah Valley (9-10, 1-1 in Great West) had a three-game winning streak snapped on Thursday falling to Chicago State, 69-42.  Sammie Jensen posted her 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
 
In the conference opener for the Wolverines, Utah Valley trailed by 10 with 12:45 left to go and the Wolverines put together a 16-6 run over the next seven minutes taking its first lead of the game.  Utah Valley made free throws down the stretch holding off North Dakota, 58-54.
 
The Wolverines are led by Jensen, who ranks 14th in the nation in double-doubles and rebounds – averaging 13.9ppg and 10.6rpg.  Following Jensen is Jenna Johnson with 8.6ppg.
 
Utah Valley was selected to finish second in the Great West Conference Preseason poll.  The Wolverines won the Inaugural Great West Conference Tournament in Orem, Utah in 2009-10, as the sixth-seed.
