BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – Freshman Camilla Tinari and junior Janet Snell combined for 21 kills and 15 digs leading NJIT to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-21) victory over host St. Francis (NY) at the Terrier Invitational Friday afternoon.
Tinari, an outside hitter from Rome, Italy, paced the Highlanders with 11 kills, eight digs and four service aces in her Highlander debut.
Janet Snell posted 10 kills on 22 swings with four errors for a .273 hitting percentage while adding seven digs.
Junior middle Fernanda Lima finished the match with a .462 hitting percentage (8k, 2e, 13a) while sophomore Julia Colombo and Renata Pandolfo both added five kills for the Highlanders. Pandolfo returns back to the Highlander line-up after recovering from offseason surgery in 2010.
Setter Anna Mercado piled up a match-high 38 assists, eight digs and two service aces. Defensively, NJIT was led by veterans Pandolfo and libero Audrey Snell notching 10 digs apiece.
The Highlanders who trailed early in the first set took control after a 6-6 tie, on a kill by Pandolfo, and NJIT cruised to a 25-13 win. Janet Snell led the set with seven kills.
In the second set, St. Francis (NY) took a 2-1 lead but NJIT scored the next three points and never trailed again en route to a 25-12 win.
The third set was the most competitive with the Highlanders taking an 11-5 lead. Host St. Francis (NY) pulled within two of the Highlanders, 18-16, on an NJIT attack error. But the Highlanders bounced back scoring the next three points and led the rest of the way for a 25-21 victory. Tinari led the set with eight kills.
St. Francis (NY) was led by Marina Georgieva with six kills and eight digs. Setter Kamalei Clifton added eight assists while Feliz Ramirez notched nine digs.
NJIT will wrap up the Terrier Invitational Saturday afternoon when the team faces Fordham at 12pm and Rider at 2:30pm.
