CHICAGO – NJIT won the deciding set, 15-11, and came away with a 3-2 victory over Chicago State in Great West Conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Dickens Center.
Chicago State took the first set, 25-22, before NJIT won back-to-back sets, 25-21 and 25-17 in the second and third frames. The Cougars rallied for a 25-14 victory in the fourth set but it was the Highlanders who claimed the match with a 15-11 win in the deciding set.
The deciding game went back and forth, as the Highlanders took a small 7-5 lead. Chicago State rallied back scoring three straight points to take an 8-7 lead. With the score knotted at 10, the Highlanders regained the lead, 13-10, scoring the next three points. After a Chicago State timeout, the Cougars answered with a kill from Mazvita Maziveyi. NJIT scored two straight kills by Renata Pandolfo for the victory.
NJIT (7-13, 2-3 in conference play) had four players notch double-doubles paced by junior Janet Snell (17k, 18d), followed by Pandolfo (12k, 14d), middle blocker Fernanda Lima (12k, 13d) and setter Anna Mercado (44a (match-high), 10d).
Libero Audrey Snell posted 16 digs while the Highlanders combined for 11 total team blocks led by Colombo and Gretchen VonKoenig with five block assists apiece.
Chicago State (1-20, 0-5 GWC) had three players reach double-figures led by Maziveyi's match-high 20 kills and 12 digs. Setter Emily Kramolish piled up 43 assists and 11 digs and Alexandra Mason registered 12 kills and 13 digs to go along with a team-high three block solos.
Defensively, Mysta Townsell dug-up a match-high 23 digs while younger sister Mia Townsell added 10.
NJIT will return to action on Thursday, October 20 at 7pm when the Highlanders host Utah Valley at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
