POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Marist defeated NJIT 3-0 and the Highlanders absorbed a 3-2 loss to Holy Cross Saturday afternoon in women's volleyball non-conference action at the McCann Center on the campus of Marist.
NJIT had overcome a 2-0 deficit and was ahead by two points in the final frame, 14-12, on a kill by Fernanda Lima. Holy Cross scored the next three points to pull ahead 15-14 but freshman Katie Bartlett knotted the set at 15, only to come up short when Holy Cross scored the last two points for a 17-15 win.
Senior Baaba Hughes had a team-high 17 kills on a .255 attack percentage while Janet Snell recorded 11kills.
Setter Anna Mercado was two assists shy her season-high notching 40 for the Highlanders. Libero Audrey Snell collected a team-high 18 digs followed by Janet Snell (17), Bartlett (12) and Hughes with (11). Lima recorded five block assists in front of the net for NJIT.
Megan Lynch paced Holy Cross with 18 kills and 16 digs. Lynch posted a .327 hitting percentage plus two block assists. Rebecca DeSanti collected 12 kills while Liz Ashton and Kathleen Colpoys posted 10 kills apiece.
Chelsey O'Donnell set the offense with a match-high 46 assists and contributed 18 digs defensively for Holy Cross. Elizabeth Watters dug-up a match-high 30 digs.
In the Highlanders first match of the day, Marist swept NJIT 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-8) led by Grace Hill's 18 kills and Stephanie Robinett's 11 digs.
Setter Hanna Stoiberg piled up a match-high 25 assists while Audra Brady tallied 14 assists for the Red Foxes. Katie Estes notched five of Marist's 14 service aces.
NJIT's Janet Snell, Julia Colombo and Lima each collected six kills followed by freshman Valerie Carroll with four. Mercado added 16 assists while Carly Ziemer posted 11. Janet Snell led the Highlanders defensively with nine digs as Hughes and Catherine Leung recorded four digs apiece.
The first set featured seven ties, and with the score 19-16 in favor of Marist, the Highlanders rallied off three straight points for a 19-19 score. The home team took a timeout to regroup and would score the next four points pulling ahead 23-19. A kill by NJIT's Janet Snell cut the lead to 23-19 but a kill by Marist's Hill and service ace by Allie Burke closed out the set, 25-20.
Early in the second set, the match went back and forth until Marist went ahead 15-10 on a service ace by Hill. NJIT closed the gap 19-17, on a service ace by Colombo but the Red Foxes responded with four consecutive points for a 23-17 lead. An attack error by Marist and kill by Mercado brought the Highlanders within four, 23-19, but Marist went on to take the set 25-21 on a kill by Hill.
NJIT will host its home opener on Tuesday vs. Rutgers at 7pm in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
