BROOKLYN, NY – Sophomore Janet Snell set the tone on both ends with 14 kills and 19 digs as NJIT defeated Saint Peter's, 3-1, to wrap up the Terrier Invitational Saturday afternoon on the campus of St. Francis (NY).
Janet's 14 kills and 19 digs Saturday marks the second double-double of her career. Snell posted 13 kills and 20 digs last season against South Dakota (Nov. 5).
NJIT grabbed the first set 25-13 behind a .268 hitting percentage (14 kills, 3 errors, 41 attempts). Saint Peter's evened the match 1-1 with a 25-11 victory but the Highlanders claimed the match edging the Peahens 26-24 in the third frame and 25-18 in the fourth set.
Middle Fernanda Lima posted nine kills on 19 attempts with two errors for a .368 hitting percentage. Lima also added a match-high four block assists for the Highlanders.
Freshman Valerie Carroll added eight kills and three block assists while senior Baaba Hughes was three kills shy a double-double with seven kills and 10 digs.
Setter Anna Mercado handed out a match-best 30 assists and eight digs. Libero Audrey Snell collected 17 digs while freshman Catherine Leung tallied 10 digs defensively for NJIT.
Saint Peter's was paced by Stephanie Phillips match-high 19 kills, seven digs and two service aces. The Peahens had four players notch double-figures in the digs category led by – Kim Mendoza (23), Katie McFadden (20), Shannon Doheny (13) and Corey Hanes (12). Doheny also added 19 assists.
NJIT will return to action on Wednesday at 7pm when they visit Fairleigh Dickinson in Hackensack, NJ at the Rothman Center.
