Highlanders Fall in Season Opener at Terrier Invitational

Marina Georgieva had a team-high 15 kills and 21 digs leading St. Francis (NY) to a 3-1 win over NJIT at the Terrier Invitational Friday evening.

 

Host St. Francis (NY) came out on top in the first set 25-17 but the Highlanders bounced back knotting the contest 1-1 with a 25-17 victory of their own.  The Terriers took a 2-1 lead with a 25-16 win in the third frame and clinched the match edging the Highlanders in the final set 27-25.

 

The Highlanders were paced by senior Baaba Hughes, who recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs in the season opener for NJIT. Sophomore Anna Mercado posted a double-double of her own piling up 42 assists and 15 digs.

 

Freshman Valerie Carroll making her Highlander debut posted 10 kills, six digs and three block assists for NJIT.   

 

Junior libero Audrey Snell dug-up a team-high 25 digs followed by younger sister Janet Snell with 16 digs.  Carroll and Fernanda Lima combined for six of the Highlanders eight blocks in front of the net.  Lima hit .636 for the match (7 kills, 0 errors, 11 attempts). 

 

The Terriers had three players post double-figure kill totals – Georgieva (15), Anisa Lila (14) and Thalita Paladino (11).   Setter Maria Kashavelova had a match-high 49 assists while Liliana Rodriguez posted a match-high 40 digs. 

 

Gina Giles led in front of the net for the Terriers with four block assists and two block solos while Lila combined for three block assists and one solo.

 

The Highlanders will wrap up the Terrier Invitational when they face Saint Peter's Saturday at 1pm.
