Women’s Basketball Preview vs. Delaware State & Penn

Highlanders face Delaware State at home on Wednesday at 7pm

The NJIT women's basketball team will host two-first time opponents at the Fleisher Athletic Center this week. … NJIT will tip off Wednesday at 7pm vs. Delaware State and Saturday vs. Penn at 2pm.

 

NJIT (0-3) is coming off a 57-51 loss at home vs. Rhode Island despite a game-high 20 points from senior guard Jessica Gerald.

 

Sophomore Rayven Johnson scored 13 points and collected 7 rebounds. Another sophomore, Maria Sanchez, came off the Highlanders bench for a team-best 8 rebounds, matching her career high.

 

NJIT has two players averaging double-figure scoring – Gerald with 13.0ppg and junior Melanie Griffin with 10.7ppg.  Forward Johnson is averaging 9.7ppg and 5.0rpg. 

 

Delaware State (0-2) was picked to finish 10th in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.  The Hornets fell 66-31 at West Virginia in the season opener and 58-52 vs. Wright State at home on Sunday.

 

Freshman guard Deanna Harmon leads the Hornets averaging 8.0ppg and Brittany Washington pulled down a team-leading 14 rebounds (7.0rpg).

 

Penn (1-1) has been selected to finish eighth in the Ivy League.  The Quakers recorded its first victory of the season in its 70-59 win over Bryant.  Senior Jess Knapp posted a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) and freshman Alyssa Baron scored 20 points in her first career game.

 

The Quakers are looking to rebound off a 62-31 loss at Drexel on November 19.  Penn will travel to Rider on Tuesday before visiting NJIT on Saturday, November 27.

 

Baron is averaging 14.0ppg followed by Knapp's 9.5ppg and team-leading 7.5rpg.
