HAMILTON, NY – Senior Taylor Wejnert scored a game-high 22 points leading three double-figure scorers for Colgate in an 85-58 women's basketball victory over visiting NJIT Wednesday evening at Cottorell Court.
Wejnert, a 5-foot-11 guard scored 16 of her 22 points in the first half. She finished the game 8-for-12 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line while pulling down four rebounds for the home team.
Sophomore guard Jhazmine Lynch followed Wejnert with 15 points off the bench for the Raiders and senior guard Sami Kozlowski added 11 points in 20 minutes of action. Forward Krista Moser was the game-leader with eight rebounds.
Junior guard Melanie Griffin led the Highlanders for the second straight game with 13 points shooting 6-for-13 from the field.
Sophomore Rayven Johnson was the only other Highlander to reach double-digits with 10. Johnson was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Jelena Zoric registered a career-high 12 points for the Highlanders. Zoric, who was sidelined last season due to an ACL injury, was 4-for-8 from behind the arc and the team-leader with four rebounds. Both are a career-high for the sophomore. Senior Jessica Gerald added nine points.
Freshman Kristian Parker, playing in her second college game scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds off the bench for NJIT.
After building a 49-27 lead after a first half that saw Colgate (1-2) shoot 58 percent from the field (17-29), the Raiders extended its lead to 28, in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
Colgate shot 56 percent from the field (32-57) and 89 percent from the free throw line (16-18). The Highlanders finished the game 75 percent from the free throw line (12-16).
The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday, November 20 at 2pm and host Rhode Island at the Fleisher Athletic Center.
This will be the second meeting between the two teams. Last season, the Rams defeated the Highlanders 51-47 in the closing seconds.
