BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY - Three Highlanders produced double-figure kill totals to lead NJIT in its season-opening 3-0 women's volleyball win over St. Francis (NY) in the opening round of the St. Francis Tournament, Friday afternoon.
NJIT took the match in straight sets 25-14, 25-15, 25-16 led by junior Baaba Hughes and senior Katrina Hornstein sharing team-high honors with 12 kills.
Sophomore Highlander Renata Pandolfo registered 10 kills while senior middle Kristy Haeckel added eight kills on 13 attempts with three errors for a .385 hitting percentage.
Freshman Fernanda Lima, making her first collegiate appearance tallied three kills on eight attempts with one block solo and two block assists.
Senior setter Erica Schultz recorded a double-double on the day with 34 assists and 10 digs for the Highlanders.
Defensively, NJIT was paced by libero Sabrina Baby with 14 digs, Pandolfo (9) and Hughes (7).
Host St. Francis was led by outside hitter Anisa Lila with 12 kills and six digs while Maria Kashavelova notched 18 assists.
The Highlanders will wrap up the two-day tournament facing Bucknell on Saturday at 1:30pm and Saint Peter's at 3:00pm.
