MILWAUKEE – Junior forward Paige Fiedorowz poured in 19 points, leading four double-figure scorers as Marquette exploded past NJIT, 81-41, Thursday night in women's basketball action at the Al McGuire Center.
Marquette's Fiedorowz was followed by freshman forward Sabrina Simmons (career-high 17 points), sophomore forward Jessica Pachko (13 points) and senior guard Janelle Harris (12 points). Simmons and Harris combined for 17 rebounds.
NJIT (2-5) was led by starters' Jessica Gerald and Taiwo Oyelola posting 10 points apiece Thursday night. Gerald has scored in double-digits in five-out-of-seven contests this season with a season-high 27 points vs. Wagner (November 17). Taiwo Oyelola made four shots from field (2-3 on three pointers) in 15 minutes of action.
Freshman guard Emily Schartner came off the bench for the Highlanders setting a career-high -- four points and three rebounds in 18 minutes.
The Highlanders scored the first bucket of the contest on a jumper by Gerald at 18:25 but Marquette's Fiedorowz scored the first seven points for the Golden Eagles taking a 7-4 lead at the 16:44 mark. A three-point play by Harris pushed the Golden Eagle lead to six, 10-4.
NJIT cut the deficit to six, on a fast break lay-up by Schartner, 14-8, with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Golden Eagles (5-2) went on a 22-7 run to end the first period for a 36-15 halftime score. Fiedorowz scored 15 of her points in the opening 20 minutes to pace Marquette. NJIT got four points apiece from Gerald and Schartner.
Marquette made 14 of its 29 field goal attempts (48 percent) in the second half and combined for 45 second-half points.
The Highlanders will return to action on Wednesday, December 9 to host Colgate at 5pm in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
