NEWARK, NJ – Adelphi's Domenico Parrelli scored a goal and added an assist in the Panthers 3-1 victory over NJIT in Atlantic Soccer Conference play Friday evening.
The Panthers, who are now 2-1-1 in the conference, scored first on Parrelli's goal at 36:06, assisted by freshman James Diana. Diana set up the play crossing the ball inside the box to Parrelli for his second goal of the season.
NJIT, which is 1-2-0 in the ASC with one conference game still to play, was able to operate in the offensive end, but could not draw even before Adelphi's Diana made it 2-0 when he scored off on a header in the in the 67th minute.
Adelphi picked up its third goal of the contest at 72:27, as Val Charalambous scored off a corner kick slipping the ball through NJIT's defense.
NJIT, which had an early shot hit off the cross bar, and got on the board when freshman Franco Gamero scored his second collegiate goal with less than three minutes remaining in the contest.
Adelphi's goalkeeper Thorne Holder took the win stopping eight shots while senior Ryan Sutherland recorded two saves. Junior Arto Altincatal played the final 11:21 in goal for the Highlanders.
The eight Highlander seniors honored during halftime ceremonies were: Marco Gaspar, Alex Brito, Erik Magnusson, Gustav Warfving, Osvaldo Perez, Scott Rietze, Sutherland and Tom Dores.
NJIT will close out the regular season on Sunday when they travel to Howard for an Atlantic Soccer Conference matchup. The match is scheduled to start at 1pm.
