Bucknell Tops Highlanders, 2-0

NEWARK, NJ – Bucknell scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 men's soccer win over NJIT Tuesday night at Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.

 

The win was the 13th of the season for the Bison, who have won the last eight out of nine contests since September 30.

 

Bucknell's Luke Joyner and Josh Plump each scored a goal while Joyner picked up an assist on the night.  Bison Ryan Sappington and Conor O'Biren each had an assist.

 

Joyner, a sophomore midfielder put Bucknell on the board at 56:31 assisted by Sappington.  Joyner's tally came on a header off a corner kick past NJIT's diving goalkeeper Ryan Sutherland.

 

The Bison added an insurance goal three minutes later on a pass from Joyner who sent the ball to O'Brien, finding Plump inside the box on a header.  O'Brien recorded his team-leading seventh assist.

 

Highlander goalkeeper Sutherland made seven saves, while his Bucknell counterpart, Will Bryne, notched his first shutout of the season, making three saves.  Junior Arto Altincatal made his second appearance of the season in goal for NJIT in the final 7:10.

 

NJIT closest chance to score in the second half came at the 83:42 mark on a cross from senior Erik Magnusson from the left side of the field to a running Franco Gamero, but Gamero's shot went high.

 

The Highlanders have just two regular season matches remaining. They will close out the home portion of the schedule with Senior Night Atlantic Soccer Conference matchup against Adelphi on Friday at 7 pm on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium during halftime.

 

The final regular season game will be on November 1 in Washington, DC, in a conference match against Howard.
