EASTON, PA – Renata Pandolfo and Janet Snell combined for 18 kills leading New Jersey Institute of Technology past Lafayette, 3-0, in women's volleyball action Wednesday night at Kirby Sports Center.
NJIT won the first set 25-21 before winning the next two frames 25-16 and 25-22 for the Highlanders 14th win overall.
Pandolfo, the sophomore outside hitter, shared match-high honors with freshman Janet Snell, posting nine kills. The nine kills for Janet were a career-high. Senior middle Kristy Haeckel finished the night with seven kills on 15 attempts for a .467 attack percentage with no errors.
Great West Conference Player of the Week Baaba Hughes added five kills while freshman Fernanda Lima recorded four kills with two attack errors in nine attempts for a .222 hitting percentage.
Blocking was not much of a factor for either team (3-2 in team blocks, favoring Lafayette), but the Highlanders had a slight advantage in the serving game, 6-4. Janet Snell and Pandolfo led the way for NJIT with two service aces.
NJIT senior setter Erica Schultz registered a match-high 21 assists as Pandolfo collected a team-high 13 digs while libero Sabrina Baby tallied 12. Baby, the Highlanders co-captain leads the nation in digs per set (6.63dps) in matches through October 11.
Lafayette's Cara Mulholland posted eight kills and nine digs for the Leopards. Kari Horn led the match with a high of 14 digs. Sarah Frohnapfel and Ashton Rossi split time at the setting position piling up 15 and 14 assists respectively for the home team.
The Highlanders will return to Great West Conference action next Friday, October 23 when they travel to Grand Forks, ND and face University of North Dakota at 7:00pm (CT).
