AMHERST, MA – Four players scored in double figures for the University of Massachusetts in its 63-50 win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology in women's college basketball Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
In the first half, NJIT's defense was strong, as it held UMass to 37 percent, shooting (10-27) as the Highlanders shot 48 percent (13-27) from the field led by its leading scorer Jessica Gerald with 15 first half points.
The Minutewomen took control early in the second half, outscoring NJIT 35-20. UMass made 40 percent of its second half shots (11-21) and scored 12 points off NJIT 11 turnovers.
UMass got a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes from Kristina Danella. Teya Wright and Stefanie Gerardot scored 12 points apiece while Sakera Young scored 10 points respectively. Wright shared game-high honors with NJIT's Ivana Seric collecting eight rebounds.
NJIT was led by sophomore Gerald who posted a game-high 20 points. Gerald scored 15 points in the first half shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Seric chipped in eight points and Kehinde Oyelola had seven points off the bench for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders jumped out of the starting blocks early with a 7-2 advantage over the first three minutes of the game, led by Gerald with five points. UMass answered scoring the next 10 points as they held the Highlanders scoreless until Gerald sank a three-pointer from the left side of the court at the 12:20 mark, pulling the Highlanders within two, 12-10.
The game went back and forth with both teams trading baskets and having five lead changes, the last coming at 6:22 when UMass's Wright hit a lay-up knotting the game at 21.
Senior co-captain Jackie McCaffrey started the Highlanders 6-0 run hitting a jumper from the top of the key at the 5:50 mark as NJIT connected on the next two consecutive baskets taking a six-point lead, 27-21 with 3:47 left in the first half.
NJIT ahead 30-28 at the break, UMass scored first in the second half hitting a three-pointer from the top of the key. Gerald responded at the 17:20 mark, driving to the basket and made her way to the free throw line hitting one-of-two giving the Highlanders a one-point lead, 32-31.
UMass built a 51-33 advantage over a nine-minute stretch keeping the game out of reach from the Highlanders.
NJIT will return to action on Friday when they travel to New Haven, Connecticut to face Yale. Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm.
