LORETTO, PA: New Jersey Institute of Technology won for the second time in its last three matches, topping host Saint Francis (PA), 3-0, in women's volleyball action at the Red Flash Invitational Saturday afternoon.
In the day's first match, Akron defeated Columbia 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-12), led by Akorn's Jackie Goleman and Brionna Patterson, who recorded 10 kills apiece.
None of the sets Saturday were blowouts, as the Highlanders won 25-22, 25-20 and 26-24.
NJIT, which posted its third 3-0 win of the season, raised its overall record to 4-7 with the victory over Saint Francis (PA).
Freshman Renata Pandolfo posted nine kills, eight digs and five total blocks. #Katrina Hornstein followed with six kills while Baaba Hughes and Agnieszka Pregowska# recorded five apiece. Hughes hit .222 in the match (5 kills, 3 errors, 9 attempts).
Junior setter Erica Schultz notched her second double-double of the year (her first coming against BIG EAST Seton Hall in her 2008 debut on Wednesday night -- 36 assists, 10 digs), piling up a team-high 24 assists to go along with 16 digs.
Defensively, Sabrina Baby shared game-high honors with Saint Francis (PA) Shirely Miller with 17 digs. Miller also added 12 kills in the loss. Hornstein helped the Highlander defense registering 15 digs.
The Highlanders combined for 12 total blocks as a team led by Pandolfo with five and middle blocker Kristy Haeckel with four.
For Saint Francis (PA), Kristin Bulter led the match with 15 kills and 11 digs while setter Rikki Myers recorded a match-high 26 assists.
The Highlanders wrap up the Red Flash Invitational at 3pm when they play Akron.
