Women's Volleyball Wraps up 2008 Sun Bowl Invitational

EL PASO, TX - Butler's Jessica Wolfe notched 18 kills en route to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-16) win over New Jersey Institute of Technology in the final game of the 2008 Sun Bowl Invitational hosted by University of Texas at El Paso.

Game two, was led by Wolfe who keyed the Bulldogs offense with a match-high18 kills, six digs and four block assists. Kelsey Labrum contributed with seven kills followed by Dana Daprile and Stephanie Steele adding six each.

Dana Daprile registered 21 assists while younger sister Katie Daprile shared game-high honors with NJIT's Juliana Araujo with 10 digs.

NJIT's Kristy Haeckel and Katrina Hornstein posted six kills each while teammate Renata Pandolfo tallied five.

In the day's first match, the Highlanders faced host University of Texas at El Paso and were swept 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) in three straight frames.

NJIT's closest set came in the second frame when the Highlanders found themselves ahead (12-10) on a kill by junior Haeckel. UTEP head coach Ken Murphy called for a timeout to re-group. The Miners rallied scoring four straight points taking a (14-12) lead.

Both teams went back and forth as it became knotted at 19 on a service error by UTEP. NJIT came within one point of the Miners on two different occasions - (21-20) on a kill by freshman Pandolfo and (22-21) on an attacking error by UTEP.

Senior Miner Daidre Mendenhall and Amy Saunders recorded back-to-back points for UTEP pulling away (24-21). The Miners scored the final point on a kill by Catherine Chavez taking a (25-22) victory.

NJIT was led by Haeckel and Pandolfo as they tallied six kills each. Hornstein and Baaba Hughes followed behind with five and four kills respectively. Senior setter Danielle Thompson piled up 17 assists.

One the defensive side, NJIT had two players in double-figures in the digs category. Pandolfo, dug-up a team-high 13 digs while junior Sabrina Baby followed behind with 12. Three different Highlanders added three digs.

Catherine Chavez posted a double-double 12 kills, 10 digs as teammate Mendenhall hit an impressive 10-for-17 with a .412 hitting percentage. Setter Patty Jarmoc recorded a match-high 36 assists.

The Miners combined for 16 total blocks led by Jarmoc and Mendenhall with five block assists apiece.

NJIT returns to action on Wednesday, September 9 when they host their season home opener against Wagner College at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm.
