NJIT's Doci Named National Division I Independent Women's Tennis Player of the Year

2007-08 All Independent Women's Tennis Teams

EDINBURG, TX - NJIT junior Iulia Doci was selected as the 2007-08 national Division I Independent Player of the Year in women's tennis and she joined three other Highlanders on the all-Independent women's tennis team.

Doci was named to the all-Independent first team at number one singles, while NJIT sophomore Fanny Aizier was a first-team honoree at number four singles.

Highlander sophomore Dasa Stanimirovic was named to the all-Independent second team at number five singles and Doci and senior Fatima Kasem were second-team selections at first doubles for NJIT, which finished with a 12-8 overall record in its second season of Division I competition.

Standing at 6-foot-1 from Bistrita, Romania, Doci finished the 2007-08 season with a 16-3 overall record at #1 singles while adding a 8-2 record at first doubles with partner Kasem and a 5-3 record at first doubles with teammate Isha Toor. Doci's career singles record is 51-11, all at number one.

Doci started off the fall of 2007 with a 3-0 record at #1 singles as she advanced to the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Regional Round of 64, where she lost to the #8 seed.

Aizier, a sophomore from Aix-en-Provence, France, finished her second season as a Highlander with a 15-4 overall record (11-3 at #3 singles). Aizier began the fall of 2007 with a 2-1 record (all at #3 singles). In the last 10 matches of the season, Aizier posted an 8-2 record at #4 singles.

Stanimirovic, a native of Novi Sad, Serbia, and a transfer from UMass, completed her first year at NJIT with an overall record of 10-7 (6-6 at #5 singles); (2-1 at #2 singles) and 2-0 at the fourth spot.

Kasem, one of three seniors on the NJIT squad, teamed with Doci at the No. 1 spot. The duo compiled a record of 8-2. Kasem closes out her senior season with a 7-8 overall record (6-8 at #3 singles; 1-0 at #2 singles).

Chicago State's Dian Mayasari was named Freshman of the Year while Texas-Pan American's Robert Hubbard earned Coach of the Year.

The end of the year independent awards are nominated and voted on by head coaches at nine NCAA Division I Independent schools.
