Highlanders Wrap Up Spring Break Trip Falling to Cornell

WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Cornell's DH Jadd Schmeltzer went 4-for-5 with five RBI's as the Big Red defeated NJIT 17-2 in the final day of the Palm Beach Challenge.

Schmeltzer registered two singles and two doubles in the game with one run. LF Domenic Di Ricco hit a perfect 3-for-3 on the night with four runs scored. Kyle Groth blasted a three run homer in the top of the fourth.

RHP Matt Hill (3-1) pitched 7.0 innings allowing two runs while fanning nine Highlanders. Michey Brodsky finished the game pitching two scoreless frames.

Leading the Highlanders on the night was rookie James D'Aloia - the only Highlander to record two hits in the game. Matt Schlitter, Mike Turner, Matt Marotta and Chris Cardone recorded one hit apiece.

NJIT freshman starter Anthony Corsi (0-1) records the loss. Sophomore Mike Burgaleta came in to pitch 2.0 innings, striking out four. Rob Pietrocola and Spiro Molfetas each faced 15 batters. LHP Matt Melody faced the final five batters of the night, striking out three-out-of-five. NJIT pitching staff struckout 14 Big Red batters.

The Highlanders fell down quickly in its final game of the Palm Beach Challenge, 7-0, as Cornell tacked on two runs in the first and five in the second led by DH Schmeltzer with a two-out single to left field driving in two runs.

Cornell added six more runs in the top half of the fourth on a three run blast to right field by junior RF Kyle Groth.

NJIT got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a blooper to center by D'Aloia driving in tri-captain Matt Schlitter who started off the inning with a single to right center.

The Highlanders will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Seton Hall. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
