New Jersey Institute of Technology women's volleyball team captured their first victory of the season 3-2 (30-22, 23-30, 30-17, 15-7) over Marist in the final day of the Trident Classic in women's volleyball action.
Game two, was led by sophomore Kristy Haeckel who keyed the Highlanders' offense against Marist with a team-high 15 kills leading four Highlanders with double-figure totals. Kubra Tanrikulu who red-shirted last year recorded 13 kills 12 digs, sophomore Agnieszka Pregowska added 12 as Erica Schultz and Katrina Hornstein notched 11 apiece.
Schultz posted her second double-double of the day piling up a career-high 41 assists and 11 kills. Libero Sabrina Baby led the way on the defensive end notching a match-high 16 digs. Hornstein followed behind with 15. Pregowska combined for six total blocks in the victory.
The Stags jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the final frame as the Highlanders then posted five straight points pulling ahead 5-2 on kills by Haeckel and Schultz. Marist decided to take a timeout to recuperate as they fired out a kill by Kelsey Schaefer as they came out of their time out decreasing the lead, 5-3. NJIT never looked back as they took the game 15-7, led by Schultz with two kills.
In the day's first match, the Highlanders faced CCSU for the second time this season and were edged (30-27, 28-30, 27-30, 30-23, 15-8) in five games.
The Blue Devils and Highlanders were even 1-1 after two frames. NJIT came away with a 30-27 win in the third as CCSU battled back taking game four 30-23 and the deciding frame 15-8.
In the deciding game, the Highlanders sparked a 3-0 lead on two service aces by Sabrina Baby and a kill by junior Kubra Tanrikulu. The Blue Devils recorded five straight points taking a 6-4 lead as the Highlanders opted to take a timeout to pull together. The game went back and forth as the game became knotted at eight on a service ace by Agnieszka Pregowska. CCSU recorded seven straight points en-route to a 15-8 victory led by Amanda Olmstead with two kills.
NJIT sophomore Katrina Hornstein led the way for the Highlanders posting her first double-double of the season (12 kills, 12 digs). Kristy Haeckel added 12 while Agnieszka Pregowska posted a team-high 13 kills.
The Highlanders combined for 13 service aces opposed to CCSU's six. Pregowska posted a game-high six service aces as teammate Sabrina Baby recorded five.
Baby dug-up a team-high 24 digs on the defensive end. Sophomore Erica Schultz recorded her first double-double as a Highlander (34 assists, 12 digs) in the loss.
For CCSU, Katie Karkow and Lauren Snyder each posted 19 kills apiece. Amanda Bayer piled up 57 assists in the Blue Devil victory.
The Highlanders return to action Tuesday, September 11, as they host their season opener at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center against Lafayette. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm.
