Seton Hall Nips NJIT, 3-2 In Marathon Match

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Seton Hall University won the deciding game, 16-14, and came away with a 3-2 match win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology in women's volleyball action Wednesday night.

Seton Hall took the first and second game, 30-17, 30-23 before NJIT won back-to-back games 30-23, 32-30 in the third and fourth frames as the Pirates claimed the match with a 16-14 win in the deciding game.

The deciding game went back and forth, as the Pirates took a small 12-10 lead. The Highlanders rallied back scoring three straight points to regain the lead. With the score 14-13 NJIT, the Highlanders committed an error tying the match at 14. Seton Hall took advantage and scored two straight kills by Sarah Osmun for the victory.

For the Highlanders, Kristy Haeckel notched her second double-double of the season notching 22 kills and 18 digs with four service aces and three total blocks. Haeckel's first double-double of the year came against St. Peter's on August 25 -- 15 kills, 10 digs.

Following behind was teammate Agnieszka Pregowska with 15 kills, seven digs and three service aces. Sophomore setter Danielle Thompson piled up 39 assists while on the defensive side Sabrina Baby dug-up a team-high 21 digs.

The Highlanders combined for 12 service aces and 14 total blocks led by Pregowska and Haeckel with three.

Osmun led two Pirates with double-figure totals in the kills and digs categories. Usmun posted 27 kills -- 14 digs while Allie Matters combined for 18 kills -- 28 digs. Stacey Craighead notched 16 kills as teammate Tricia Myers recorded 11. Brittany Rahrer notched a match-high 59 assists.

The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday, September 8 when they travel to Annapolis, MD to take on Central Connecticut State and Marist in the Trident Classic. The first match is scheduled to start at 11am against CCSU. NJIT faces Marist later in the day at 4pm.

NJIT started off their 2007 campaign against CCSU on August 25 when they were topped by the Blue Devils 3-1. Sophomore Haeckel keyed the Highlanders' offense with a match-high 19 kills leading three Highlanders with double-figure totals while classmate Baby collected a team-high 21 digs.
