Wagner's Quick Response Edges Highlanders, 2-1

Sept. 30, 2007

Box Score

STATEN ISLAND, NY - Less than four minutes after NJIT had tied the game at a goal apiece late in the second half, Wagner's Stephanie Burnett delivered what proved to be the game-winning tally in a 2-1 win for the Seahawks in women's soccer Sunday afternoon.

Wagner sophomore Dominique Bonura found the back of the net for the first goal just 8:59 into Sunday's contest. Brooke Keany assisted.

That score held up for more than 60 minutes of the tight match, until Xiomara Medina, the speedy NJIT freshman, picked up her first college goal, unassisted at 69:19.

The Highlanders, who came in with six losses by the razor-thin margin of one goal, met the same fate again after Burnett notched the go-ahead goal at 73:12.

Burnett's winning goal was a header off of a corner kick by Whitney Prindible.

After Burnett scored, the teams played 16:48 of scoreless soccer up to the final whistle.

NJIT goalkeeper Sadie Mele stopped five of Wagner's seven shots on goal and Wagner keeper Samantha Schueschner made three saves.

The overall shot totals favored Wagner, 10-8, although the Highlanders had a 3-2 advantage in the second half. The Seahawks had six corner kicks to five for NJIT.

Five players combined for NJIT's eight shots. Medina, Dena Baskous and Aine O'Dwyer had two shots apiece, while Kyrsten Howell-Harries and Christi Taylor each got off a shot. Both of Medina's two shots were on goal and Baskous and O'Dwyer had one shot on goal each.

NJIT which is halfway through an eight-game stint of away games, will travel to Philadelphia for a 7 pm match at La Salle on Friday.
