Erica Schultz and Kristy Haeckel dominated on offense and Sabrina Baby had another stellar defensive match for NJIT in its 3-0 women's volleyball win over Quinnipiac Saturday in the NJIT Invitational in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
NJIT, which split its Friday matches, bounced back for a 30-14, 30-23, 30-13 win on Saturday against Quinnipiac. On Friday, the Highlanders defeated St. Francis (NY), 3-0, before falling to Utah Valley in a hard-fought 3-1 evening match.
NJIT is 2-1 in this weekend's tournament and owns a 6-4 record over its last 10 matches. The Highlanders have won three of the last four, with all three wins coming by 3-0 scores.
Schultz had a match-best 12 kills and Haeckel had 11 kills without an error to lead the Highlanders over the Bobcats. Baby had 24 digs--10 more than any other player.
NJIT, which had a team attack percentage of .344 (41 kills, 8 errors, 96 attempts), used three setters. Schultz and Danielle Thompson each had 12 assists, while Ashley Craig assisted on 11.
The Highlanders dominated Quinnipiac at the net and on serve. NJIT had seven team blocks to one for the visitors. And the Highlanders dominated, 13-1, on service aces.
Haeckel had four individual blocks, while Agnieszka Pregowska and Rebecca Wilkinson had three apiece. Kubra Tanrikulu served a match-best four aces for NJIT.
The Quinnipiac leaders were Janelle Walz with 10 kills, Erin Overdevest with 14 digs and Jenna Benigno with 18 assists.
Earlier on Saturday, Utah Valley dominated St. Francis, 3-0. Utah Valley completed tournament play at 3-0. defeating Columbia and NJIT by identical 3-1 scores and then beating St. Francis on Saturday morning.
St. Francis finished up at 1-2. The Terriers lost to NJIT and Utah Valley, but defeated Quinnipiac, 3-2.
Quinnipiac, which lost to St. Francis on Friday and then NJIT on Saturday, was slated to close out its stay in the NJIT Invitational against Columbia at 3 pm.
The tournament will end with a 6 pm match between NJIT and Columbia.
