VESTAL, NY -
Senior Amanda Bayiokos scored to stake the NJIT women's soccer team to a 1-0 lead, but Binghamton University rallied for three second-half goals and the Bearcats upended the visiting Highlanders, 3-1, in Tuesday night action.
Bayiokos, one of three captains for NJIT, produced the only score for either team in the first half, notching an unassisted goal at the 6:46.
The goal by Bayiokos stood up for nearly 40 minutes, as NJIT nursed its 1-0 lead into the halftime break, with goalkeeper Sadie Mele turning away six Binghamton shots on goal.
However, the home team pulled even early in the second half on a goal by Amanda Casares, assisted by Danielle White just 1:35 into the second stanza.
The Bearcats pushed ahead a few minutes later when Tricia Reed picked up what proved to be the game-winner on her third tally of the season at 59:14. Kim Povill assisted.
Binghamton broke through with the insurance goal barely five minutes after that, when White, who had helped out on the first Bearcat score, notched her third goal of 2007, assisted by Casey Pedersen in the 65th minute.
Two goalkeepers appeared for Binghamton. Starter Erin Iman went 79:17 and allowed the Highlander goal. Jen McEachron went the last 10:43 and did not face a shot on goal.
NJIT's Mele went the full 90 minutes and made 11 saves, the second-highest total of her rookie season (12 vs. Quinnipiac in overtime).
The Highlanders who have completed two games in what will be an eight-game string of road contests, will visit West Long Branch, NJ, where they will take on Monmouth, a traditionally strong program, on Friday at 3 pm.
