Katrina Hornstein Named to the Crimson Classic All-Tournament Team

CAMBRIDGE, MA - NJIT women's volleyball team came up short in the final day of the Crimson Classic Saturday evening. The Highlanders lost to Dartmouth, 3-0, and then were topped by Harvard, 3-1.

NJIT sophomore Katrina Hornstein was selected to the Crimson Classic All-Tournament team averaging 2.82 kills and 5.18 digs per game.

The day's action left the Highlanders with a 4-14 overall record.

Dartmouth defeated NJIT, 23-30, 21-30 and 16-30, while the Highlanders' match against Harvard was close throughout, with Harvard winning, 30-27, 24-30, 24-30, 23-30.

In Saturday's opening match, the Highlanders were led by Kristy Haeckel and Katrina Hornstein who recorded eight kills apiece. Sophomore transfer Erica Schultz followed behind with seven.

On the defensive end, Sabrina Baby and Hornstein notched 14 digs while Schultz added with a double-double 10 digs, 14 assists. Junior Danielle Thompson added 14 assists. The Highlanders combined for eight blocks led by junior Rebecca Wilkinson.

Dartmouth's offense was led by Morgan Covington with 13 kills while Amanda Marston dug-up 17 digs. Katie Hirsch posted a match-high 36 assists.

In the final match of the night against Harvard, four Highlanders notched double figure totals in the kills' category. Schultz who collected 10 kills 18 assists and 14 digs recorded her second triple-double of the year.

Leading the Highlanders was sophomore Haeckel who recorded 13 while junior Agnieszka Pregowska notched 11. Thompson tallied up 24 assists and six digs.

NJIT recorded 105 digs in the match led by Baby with a match-high 32 digs, leading three Highlanders in double figure totals. Hornstein followed with 26, Kubra Tanrikulu dug-up 15 while Schultz posted 14.

The Highlanders combined as a team for 14 service aces. Baby and Pregowska led the team with four while Thompson added three.

For Harvard, Laura Mahon posted a match-high 20 kills while Lily Durwood piled up a match-high 39 assists.

Selected to the Crimson Classic All-Tournament team were: Katie Kirsch (Dartmouth),Sandy Barbut (Dartmouth), Lauren Las (Harvard), Mimi Hanley (Harvard), Jennifer Monroy (Hartford) and Katarina Hornstein (NJIT).

The Highlanders return to action Wednesday, September 26 when they host Fairleigh Dickinson at the Fleisher Athletic Center. The match is scheduled for 7pm.
