2007 NJIT Classic Results

BRONX, NY - NJIT freshmen Amanda Hefferan was the top finisher on the women's side while Stefan Montalvo placed fifth on the men's side as both cross country teams competed at the NJIT Classic which was held at Van Cortlandt Park Sunday afternoon.

The 5k race which was scored as double-dual meets were against Long Island, St. Francis (NY), St. Peter's and Fairleigh Dickinson.

Hefferan, who covered the 5K race recorded a freshman record with a finish time of (19:58) breaking her old time of (24.48) which she set on September 8 at the Hofstra Invitational.

Sophomore captain Cara Constantino placed seventh with a time of(22:47). Head Coach Al Alonso stated, "She is back on track to where she was last year and intends her to be better then last year while freshmen Daisy Gellegos and Nicole Garrison who made a big improvement from the last meet finished side by side (24:17, 24:19).

Also placing for the Highlanders was: senior Jackie McCaffrey (25:32), sophomore Lesley Hendricks (26:06) and freshman Shawntel Young (27:50).

For the men, Montalvo finished fifth (29.33) breaking his time of (29.56) that he had recently set in his Highlander debut at the Hofstra Invitational on September 8. With his time of (29.33) he ranks in the top 30-sub club.

Senior Duc Tran completed the course finishing 11th with a time of (30.31) while teammate Michael Gurlacz crossed the line 13th (30.52). Finishing side by side was Michael Genauer and freshman Mark Givens (31.07, 31.14).

Other finishers for the Highlanders were: Babatunde Busari, who raced in his first race of the 2007 season today coming off an injury from last year Matthew Magnifico, Chadwick Munroe, Brad Leonhardt, Drew Pennyfeather, Jamil Wilkins and Peter Klabe.

The Highlanders return to action Saturday, September 22 at Van Cordtland Park for the Iona Meet of Champions. The women begin at 10:15am while the men start at 11:15am.
