Virginia Tech Tops Highlanders, 3-0

QUEENS, NY - Highlander libero Sabrina Baby recorded a match-high 16 digs as Virginia Tech took a 3-0 decision over NJIT in day two of the St. John's Classic Saturday morning in women's volleyball action.

The first of three games was close as Virginia Tech came on top each time, 30-25, 30-15, 30-16.

In the first match, the Highlanders saw Virginia Tech jump out to a 13-9 lead. NJIT responded notching four straight points, knotting the game at 13-13 on three errors by the Hokies and a dominant kill by outside hitter Agnieszka Pregowska.

The Highlanders took their first lead of the game 24-23 on a service ace by sophomore Kristy Haeckel. The Hokies responded with six straight points as they never looked back taking game one 30-25.

Virginia Tech's offense was too much to handle in games two and three which was led by Betsey Horowitz with six kills. Horowitz posted a match-high 10 kills in the victory.

For the Highlanders, Haeckel led the offense just missing double figure totals in the kills category connecting with nine kills, four digs and two service aces. Pregowska followed with six kills while three Highlanders posted three apiece.

Sophomore setter Danielle Thompson piled up 18 assists as teammate Katrina Hornstein connected on nine digs.

Virginia Tech's Michelle Lang recorded a match-high 30 assists while Amy Wengrenovich and Sarah Munoz notched 12 and 11 digs respectively.

The Highlanders return to action today at 5pm when they play their final match of the St. John's Classic taking on Fairfield. Fairfield fell to Virginia Tech 3-1 and then was later topped by No. 24 Long Beach State 3-0 yesterday. The Stags face St. John's at noon today.
