Women's Volleyball Opens Season at Central Connecticut State Tournament

vs. Saint Peter's vs. Central Connecticut State

NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Jersey Institute of Technology went on the road and lost on both ends in women's volleyball action Saturday, falling by identical scores 3-1 to Central Connecticut State and Saint Peter's.

In the day's first match, Central Connecticut State who was selected to finish second in the Northeast Conference this season topped the Highlanders (30-19, 30-22, 30-32, 30-28) tallying their first win of the season.

The Blue Devils captured the first two games while the Highlanders battled back winning their only game of the match, the third set, (32-30). Sophomore Kristy Haeckel keyed the Highlanders' offense with a match-high 19 kills leading three Highlanders with double-figure totals while classmate Sabrina Baby collected a team-high 21 digs.

Junior outside hitter Agnieszka Pregowska notched 14 kills as teammate Katrina Hornstein posted her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 16 digs.

In her debut as a Highlander sophomore transfer Erica Schultz tallied a career-high 35 assists in four games while Danielle Thompson added 10 in one game.

Pregowska, Haeckel and Hornstein each collected two aces apiece.

Taking on Saint Peter's, the Highlanders again only won the third set (30-23) led by Haeckel with six kills and one dig as the Peahens went on to victory in the match winning the first two games and closing out the match (30-25).

Haeckel again registered the top kills total in the match, notching 15 against St. Peter's. Pregowska and freshman Baaba Hughes were also strong in the NJIT attack with 11 and 10 kills respectively.

Schultz and Thompson split time at the setting position collecting 28 assists in four games and 14 for Thompson in two games.

On the defensive side for NJIT, they combined for 16 blocked assists led by Haeckel (6) and Pregowska (5). Baby and Hornstein combined for 26 digs.

The Highlanders will return to action on Thursday, August 28 when they travel to West Point, NY to take on Army. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm.
