May 8, 2007
PISCATWAY, NJ -
New Jersey Institute of Technology sophomore PJ Saporito is the latest New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 6, Doug Drabik of Rutgers University announced today.
Mike Bionde of Rutgers was named Player of the Week hitting .591in a 5-0 week, which included a three-game sweep of Cincinnati in Big East play over the weekend while teammate Casey Gaynor tabbed Rookie of the Week striking out a career-high nine batters in 6.1 innings in a victory over Cincinnati.
Saporito threw a complete-game five hitter for NJIT's first Division I shut-out in a 2-0 win over visiting New York Institute of Technology on May 4, at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The sophomore left hander, now (4-4), posted a season-high nine strikeouts allowing five hits without a walk, as he scattered three hits through the first eight innings before allowing two hits to open the ninth. As he protected his two-run lead against the heart of the NYIT order, Saporito proceeded to nail down his first career complete game by retiring the next three batters.
