Senior righthander Brian Ascolese pitched a complete game recording his second win of the season in a 7-2 win over Army Tuesday afternoon at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.
Ascolese (2-2) who pitched his first complete game of the year, scattered nine hits, two runs and struck out two. Black Knight Ben Mayhew suffers the loss falling to 0-7 on the year.
The Highlanders, with two outs in the top of the third posted seven consecutive hits and six runs securing their eighth win of the year. Army fell to 16-19-1 overall.
Leading the NJIT offense was RF Kwesi Mitchell who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Junior 3B Mike Turner hit 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
In the top of the third, senior LF Derrick McCain reached base on single to right field while SS freshman Miguel Lugo hit a laser inside the first base line knotting the game at 1-1. Austin DeRogatis stepped up to the plate, with runners on second and third and smacked a two-run double into the left field corner increasing the lead 4-1. Junior 3B Mike Turner recorded his first homerun of the season hitting a two-run shot over the left field fence giving the Highlanders a 6-1 edge.
Mitchell, recorded his 10th homerun of the season in the top of the eighth inning over the left center field fence.
The only runs for Army came in the second and third innings. Bob Cirpa drove in the first Black Knight run while J.P. Polchinski recorded the second.
For Army, Cipra hit 3-for-4 with one RBI while six Black Knights posted one hit apiece.
The Highlanders return to action Wednesday, April 25 when they host Fairleigh Dickinson University at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30pm.
