University Baltimore Maryland County scored at least a run in each inning en route to an 18-5 victory over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Friday afternoon.
The Retrievers, now (7-11) took complete control of the game with a six-run fifth inning.
NJIT got ten hits, eight hits by different players. Derrick McCain, PJ Saporito and Mike Turner each recorded a double in the game. Craig Binkiewicz, Matt Schlitter, Kwesi Mitchell, Rob Pietrocola and Elliot Hagburg all had singles for the Highlanders.
Designated hitter Saporito recorded the first RBI of the game for the Highlanders in the second inning on a single to left field.
In the following inning, Binkiewicz started the rally hitting an infield single to shortstop and then stealing second. Schlitter singled up the middle scoring Binkiewicz. Turner's RBI, double to right center brought around Schlitter while the Highlanders posted two runs in the top of the third.
NJIT added a run in the fourth and in the fifth inning. Binkiewicz hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth and in the fifth Mitchell smacked an RBI, single up the middle.
Gio Bermudez, the first of three Highlander relievers, was charged with the loss in his first college decision.
Saporito finished the day 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI, while Pietrocola hit 2-for-3 with one run.
The Highlanders face UMBC Saturday in game two of the three game series at 1pm.
