TENAFLY, NJ -
Back in New Jersey and two days removed from its four-match Spring Break trip to Florida, the New Jersey Institute of Technology women's tennis team scored a decisive win, 5-2, over visiting Sacred Heart indoors Saturday evening in the Tenafly Racquet Club.
The Highlanders, who are 9-6 in their first season of competition at the NCAA Division I level, won four of the six singles contests and then all three doubles to claim the doubles point against Sacred Heart.
For NJIT, Iulia Doci was 6-2, 6-1 winner at first singles over Sacred Heart's Pam Pillo. Sacred Heart won at second and third singles, but the Highlanders' superior depth showed when Marine Henry blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at fourth singles and Fanny Aizier was nearly as dominant in the fifth slot, with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Chiori Koike triumphed at number six, 7-5, 6-3.
NJIT swept the doubles, with Doci and Fatima Kasem scoring an 8-3 win in first doubles, while Isha Toor and Aizier took a hard-fought 8-7 (5) tiebreaker win at number two. Koike and Henry completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at third doubles.
The Highlanders are off for a week before hosting Wagner at 7 pm Saturday, March 24, at the Tenafly Racquet Club.
