PHILADELPHIA -
Ramy Lawandy and Jonathan Lang scored singles wins for New Jersey Institute of Technology, but Temple prevailed, 5-2, Saturday at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Club.
Lawandy prevailed at sixth singles, 5-7, 6-2 and 10-6 in the super tiebreaker. Lang, who is undefeated in individual competition won second singles 1-6, 6-3, 3-3 (retired), when his opponent conceded after Temple had clinched the team competition.
At first singles, freshman Steve Erickson lost a close tussle with Temple's Nathan Spunda, who went to 8-1 on the season with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory on Saturday. Cosmin Chiudjea, at third singles, also had a competitive match for the Highlanders.
Due to time restrictions that sometimes arise on indoor courts, the teams agreed that doubles play would cease as soon as one team clinched two of the three contests. Temple dominated second doubles, 8-0, and as soon as the Owls won third doubles, 8-6, first doubles was halted at 7-6.
NJIT, which is 6-4, is slated to play at Saint Peter's on Wednesday, starting at 5:30 pm.
