FARGO, ND -
Senior guard Amanda Girodat scored a game-high 15 points, leading North Dakota State in an 81-49 women's basketball victory over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday night.
Girodat scored eight points in the first half and seven in the second for the Bison, who raised their record to 10-10 with the victory. North Dakota State also got two other double-figure scorers. Juniors Brenda Slyt and Emily Moran both finished with 13 points apiece. Slyt posted for 13 points in the first half and three rebounds.
The victory was number 650 for North Dakota State Hall of Fame women's basketball coach Amy Ruley, who became the 11th active Division I women's basketball coach to reach the career milestone. She has compiled a 650-186 record in 28 seasons ... all in Fargo. The Bison are currently in the fourth of a five-year reclassification from Division II to Division I. Ruley directed the program to five NCAA Division II national titles from 1991-1996.
The Highlanders were led by freshman guard Colleen Vogel, who netted 13 points while Taiwo Oyelola finished with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Jill Dickinson scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds.
North Dakota led at the end of the first half, 42-22. NJIT experienced long first-half droughts. The Highlanders were stuck on 11 points for over five minutes.
The Bison started the second half quickly, jumping out on a 7-2 run and taking a 47-27 lead with 15:13 left in the game.
The Highlanders could not get closer, as North Dakota State closed the game on a three-point jumper with 11 minutes left in the game by sophomore Ali Sonstelie giving the Bison a 60-30 lead.
For the Highlanders, senior forward Aine O'Dwyer chipped in five points and six rebounds. Ali Baumlin and Kelly Crowe grabbed three rebounds apiece.
The Highlanders are off until Wednesday, February 14, when they return to action and travel to IPFW for a 7pm start.
In their first meeting in Newark, Johnna Lewis-Carlisle and Samantha Edwards supplied most of the firepower in a 15-0 IPFW spurt that turned a two-point deficit into a 13-point lead in less than four minutes in the Mastodons' 81-70 women's basketball win on January 27.
