Women's Volleyball Wraps Up 2007 Season at Independent Tournament

OREM, UT - The NJIT women's volleyball team ended its 2007 season with a 3-0 defeat against Providence, 30-28, 30-26, 30-15 at the Division I Independent women's volleyball tournament hosted by Utah Valley.

NJIT completes its season with a 13-24 record. The 13 wins are up from the Highlanders' first season of Division I competition when they finished 2006 at 10-21. The Friars finish the season with a 14-23 record.

Leading the way for the Highlanders was sophomore Kristy Haeckel recording a team-high 14 kills and five digs. Katrina Hornstein added to the offense posting a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Senior Kubra Tanrikulu who was playing in her final game of her career added seven kills and eight digs. Agnieszka Pregowska added seven.

Sophomore Erica Schultz, finishing up her first season as a Highlander, posted a double-double piling up 33 assists and 10 digs in the loss.

Defensively, the Highlanders were led by Sabrina Baby who piled up 15 digs, one-shy a game-high 16 from Friar Kelly Krahenbuhl. Schultz added (10) while Hornstein had (11).

For the Friars, they were led by a game-high 18 kills, 10 digs from senior Sarah Fleming. Elizabeth Flynn followed with 14 kills while setter Sarah Sheehan recorded a game-high 41 assists. Providence combined for 17 total blocks led by Jeanette Toney with five.

Closing out the 2007 season as a Highlander was Tanrikulu, Rebecca Wilkinson, Ashley Craig and Kasia Rusin.

This year the Highlanders had three players named to the 2007 all-Academic team - Baby, Hornstein and Danielle Thompson who was sidelined due to injury.

NJIT tabbed four Highlanders to the 2007 Division I all-Independent team. Pregowska, a junior led the Highlanders with 462 points and ranks third on the team with 341 kills. Her 111 total blocks ranks her first on the team recording a new individual match school Division I record, with 12 total blocks.

Haeckel, the sophomore outside hitter was ranked second on the season with 352 kills in 113 games.

Baby, led the Highlander defense this year with 795 digs and 71 service aces. She recorded double-figure totals in every game but two while posting a Highlander Division I record for 42 digs against Sacred Heart on October 31.

Schultz, a sophomore transfer from Louisiana Tech is playing in her first season at NJIT. She has posted two triple-doubles this year, which came against Lafayette on Sept. 11 (11k, 41a, 23d) and at Harvard on Sept. 22 (10k, 18a, 14d). She has posted a season's best 60 assists against Providence - three shy of teammate Danielle Thompson's school Division I-record 63 last year.
