Senior forward Lauma Reke scored a game-high 20 points, leading Saint Peter's in its 68-52 women's basketball win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Wednesday night at the Yanitelli Center.
NJIT got a team-high 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds from sophomore forward Taiwo Oyelola, who was one rebound shy a double-double. She shot 4-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. 5-foot-8 freshman guard Jessica Gerald posted a career-high 10 points in just her second game as a Highlander in 19 minutes of action off the bench.
Tania Kennedy, Natasha Morris and Charlene Riddick each shared honors for the Peahens scoring 12 points. Freshman point guard Johnell Burts posted a personal-best 13 assists.
Reke scored 16 of her 20 points in the first half, as the Peahens built a 38-23 advantage after the opening 20 minutes. NJIT's Taiwo Oyelola led her team with 10 of the team's 23 first-half points.
The Highlanders sparked a 6-0 run early in the second half on three consecutive lay-ups by senior guard Erika Velez, which brought the score to 50-34. Velez returns for her final season after a season ending injury last year.
Saint Peter's went on a 10-0 run with 8:30 left in the game pushing the game out of reach from the Highlanders.
Velez and freshman Adriana Johnson who made her college debut as a Highlander tonight finished up the night with seven points. Maya Al-Shingieti chipped in six points and a career-high seven rebounds while Keri Washington added five points, five rebounds.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday, when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson at 2 pm in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
