NEWARK - The NJIT women's swimming team opened its home schedule by hosting Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

NJIT got a pair of individual first-place finishes from freshman Karen Cilento and junior Alaine Fairweather.

Cilento, a freshman from Staten Island, NY made her college debut in the water today placing first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.47). Following behind was teammate Lorin Diaz (33.94).

Fairweather, picking up from where she left off last year recorded a first place finish in the 100-freestlye (1.04.47) as Teresa Higgins followed in at (1.07.04).

The event of the day was the 200-free relay which consisted of Cilento, Diaz, Higgins and Lauren Thompson. Cilento gave the Highlanders a strong lead off but the Pioneers surged ahead in legs two and three giving the Pioneers a slight advantage going into the final leg. Higgins, the last leg of the Highlander relay fought back in the last few strokes for the win.

Visiting Sacred Heart won the meet, 100-42.

The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday, November 3 when they travel to Emmitsburg, MD to face Howard and Mt. St. Mary's (MD) in a tri-match.
