Highlanders Take Delaware State, 2-0

DOVER, DE: NJIT went to Delaware State and defeated the Hornets, 2-0, in women's soccer on Friday for the second United Soccer Conference win in three days by the Highlanders.

The Highlanders, 2-2 in the USC with one regular season conference match remaining, got both of its goals in the first half of the match which was played in the rain.

Emma Vinski scored her second goal in the last two games at 32:53 and Aine O'Dwyer, a senior playing her second season of soccer came through with her first goal of the season at 40:40. Freshman Kori Washington assisted on the O'Dwyer goal. Junior Briana Morales assisted on both NJIT scores.

Washington raised her team-leading points total to eight on three goals and two assists. She has five points in the last two games.

In goal, NJIT freshman Sadie Mele picked up her first college shutout. Mele, who has notched double-figure saves totals on four occasions this year, was forced to make just one save in blanking the Hornets Friday night.

The result was an NJIT first, as the Highlanders posted their first-ever Division I shutout victory (NJIT had a shutout tie last season against Saint Peter's, with Angelica Sepulveda in goal for 110 minutes). Mele had six previous one-goal games between the posts for this season.

The Delaware State goalkeeper, Casey Murphy, stopped four shots along with the two goals allowed.

The overall shots were 11-5 for NJIT, while the shots on goal favored the Highlanders, 6-1. NJIT had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Highlanders are off for a week before hosting South Carolina State on Friday, November 2, at 7 pm on Lubetkin Field. That match will be the final regular season conference contest of the season for the Highlanders.

After that, the regular season ends with a Senior Day non-conference home finale against Saint Peter's on November 4 at 5 pm and then the USC postseason tournament November 7 to 11 at Utah Valley.
