UMBC Takes 3-1 Volleyball Decision from Highlanders

BALTIMORE, MD - NJIT sophomore libero Sabrina Baby notched a match-high 21 digs as the Highlanders came up short 3-1 against UMBC on the road Wednesday night.

The Retrievers, who improve to 18-5 on the season, jumped out to an early lead against NJIT, topping the Highlanders 30-22, in the first game. The Highlanders pulled even with a 30-25 win in game two, before UMBC took a tight game three, 33-31, and then sealed the match with a 30-15 victory in game four.

The Highlanders attack was led by two players registering double-figure totals. Sophomore Katrina Hornstein registered 12 while classmate Kristy Haeckel followed with 11. Setter Danielle Thompson piled up 26 assists as sophomore Erica Schultz added 15.

On defense, four highlanders reached double figures in digs, led by Baby's 21. She was followed by Kubra Tanrikulu and Schultz who had 18 apiece. Hornstein combined for 15. Agnieszka Pregowska posted a team-high with five blocks.

For UMBC, Sabrina Hoeks notched a double-double with 20 kills, 16 digs. Kira Giles posted a match-high 45 assists while three retrievers reached double figures in digs led by Hoeks and Giles with 16.

NJIT's next competition will be on Friday, October 12 when they host Wager at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center. The match is scheduled to start at 5pm.
