Wagner Defeats Highlanders

STATEN ISLAND, NY - Junior guard Chelsey Bunyer scored a game-high 16 points, leading Wagner in its 61-41 women's basketball win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Thursday night at the Spiro Sports Center.

NJIT got a career-high 15 points from freshman guard Colleen Vogel, who shot 6-for-7 from the field, 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 1-for-2 from the free throw line. Vogel pulled down four rebounds and grabbed two steals.

Takesha Dye and 6-foot-3 junior center Ali Ridge shared game rebounding honors for the the Seahawks, with 7 apiece. Ali Baumlin and Kehinde Oyelola were the co-leaders for NJIT on the boards, with 6 rebounds each.

Andrea Reed, a junior guard, led her team with 6 assists and 4 steals while Ridge posted a game-high 10 blocks on the night.

Dye scored all nine of her points in the first half, as the Seahawks built a 30-16 advantage after the opening 20 minutes. NJIT's Kehinde Oyelola led her team with four of the team's 16 first-half points.

The Highlanders closed the deficit to 11 early in the second half, on Vogel's three-point jump shot that made it 32-21 with 17:15 left.

However, NJIT did not score again until Vogel's two-pointer with 12:50 remaining. By then, Wagner had added 10 points to its lead.

Senior co-captain Kelly Crowe finished up the night with 7 points and 6 boards, while Kehinde Oyelola posted 6 points, 6 rebounds in 20 minutes of action off the bench.

NJIT will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Monmouth at 7 pm in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
