Host Columbia Tops NJIT to Open Tournament

NEW YORK - Host Columbia opened its own Columbia Invitational women's volleyball tournament with a 3-0 win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Friday night.

The Lions, who were also playing their first match of the season, defeated the Highlanders (2-5) in three close games, 30-27, 30-25 and 30-24.

Cassie Ligh and Amalia Vitti combined for 25 kills to lead the Columbia attack, while Shannon Hunzicker 6collected 37 assists. Ligh had a match-high 19 digs and Ellie Thomas served 5 aces.

For the Highlanders, sophomore Aggie Pregowska had 12 kills, while freshman Kasha Hornstein again had an attack percentage over .300, notching a .318, with 10 kills, 3 errors and 22 attempts. Hornstein also had a team-best 14 digs, while classmate Sabrina Baby had 13 digs. Sophomore setter Danielle Thompson had 30 assists for NJIT.

NJIT continues play in the Columbia Invitational with two matches on Saturday--vs. Eastern power Hofstra at 11 am and Hartford at 3 pm.
