Box Score
NEWARK, NJ -
Army scored early in the second half and again late in the second half to take a 2-0 men's soccer win despite the fact that New Jersey Institute of Technology dominated a large portion of the game between the two scores Tuesday night on Lubetkin Field.
After a tightly-contested scoreless first half, Army got on the board by taking advantage of a momentary lapse in the NJIT defense, as Adrian Moreno fed Garrett Dressel at 51:57.
After the goal, the Highlanders, who had enjoyed an edge in possession, gradually gained the upper hand in the attack and applied near-constant pressure for the last 25 minutes. Trailing by one, NJIT produced at least a half-dozen bona fide scoring opportunities. Among them: a Bobby Herrera free kick that went just wide of the right post with 25 minutes left ; a two-minute stretch where the ball never left the Highlanders attacking third; a serve from the top of the box by Dylan Broadley that Army goalkeeper AJ Glubzinski tipped over the crossbar at the last instant; a cross from the left wing by Erik Magnusson that was just beyond the reach of a sliding Oskar Johansson; and a quick break out of the back that found Johansson one-on-one with Glubzinski, who came off his line to smother the ball.
Unable to convert and still pressing the attack, the Highlanders were victimized on a counter, when NJIT keeper Collin Cunning and one of his defenders got slightly tangled trying to control a loose ball, which squirted out to Army's Chase Hunter, who controlled it and walked in for an easy score at 85:25.
"We've got to find a way to get that goal, both for the win and to keep believing in ourselves," said NJIT coach Pedro Lopes. "The guys never gave up and they showed what you can do with hard work against a team (Army) that relies on hard work to beat you.
"I was pleased with everything except the final score. We were beaten on two correctible mistakes and we didn't finish our chances, but we worked hard to get the chances."
NJIT outshot Army, 17-11, including 13-5 in the second half. Glubzinski made 8 saves--all in the second half--to notch his first shutout of the season. NJIT's Cunning made 5 saves.
The Highlanders will travel to Long Island for a non-conference match at Stony Brook on Friday at 7 pm. The teams played to a scoreless tie last season in Newark and Stony Brook went on to win a game in the 2005 NCAA College Cup.
