Jayne Read's two goals and two assists led Iona to a 7-0 women's soccer win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon at Iona.
The Gaels, coming off a hard-fought 3-2 loss to the University of Oregon on the Pacific coast, got goals from five different players in the first half, before Read fired in both second-half goals for Iona.
Stephanie Sommers got the game's first goal at 8:07 for Iona, which returns 10 starters from last season's 10-win squad, she was followed by Julianne Marinaro, Maggie Prairie, Mariel Pepe and Megan Turnbull.
Each team used two goalkeepers, with Suzanne Baldissard playing the first half for Iona and Ticiana DiCarlo playing the second half for the combined shutout. NJIT starter Bruna Lotufo played 34:41 and yielded three goals, while making a save. Angelica Sepulveda finished up, stopping two shots, with four goals against, over the last 55:19.
The Highlanders will play two games this weekend in the Governor's Cup Classic hosted by the University at Albany (NY). NJIT will take on Siena on Friday at 4 pm and then close out the tournament with a 1 pm Sunday matchup against host Albany.
