The New Jersey Institute of Technology baseball team (10-10, 3-6 CACC) defeated Nyack (8-16-1, 4-8 CACC ) 15-8 on Friday night, in Nyack, NY. The Highlanders scored five runs in then ninth inning for the win.
NJIT was led by junior Mike Turner who hit 3-for-6 with a three RBI and one run scored. Senior Jeff Potter was 3-for-6 with two runs scored, two singles and a double.
The Highlanders out-hit Nyack 18-9, while Nyack stranded six runners on base. NJIT committed three errors to Nyack's two.
The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Bill Gleason hit an RBI double into the gap in left center, scoring the Warriors first run. Rookie Matt Melody found himself in trouble with the bases loaded, when he walked in one run, while junior Christian Gutierrez hit a two-out single into right center scoring two runs and going ahead 4-0. The Warriors added another run before relief pitcher Chris Legiadre came in to retire the side.
Junior Mike Turner sparked the Highlanders with a double to left field in the top of the fourth. Austin DeRogatis followed with a two-run homerun over the center field wall, coming within two runs of the Warriors.
NJIT added two more runs in the fifth when shortstop Justin Racz led off the inning with a double to left center. Derrick McCain hit an RBI single up the middle scoring Racz closing the gap, 5-4. Turner hit a looper over the third basemen's' head scoring McCain and tying the ball game at five.
The Warriors regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, 8-5 on an RBI double to left field by Brad Jacobs. An error by the centerfielder scored Andy Ashlock who drew a walk to lead off the inning.
The Highlanders returned the runs in the sixth when they scored three runs on five hits tying the game once again at 8-8. Garret Hauck, Dan Morogiello, Craig Binkiewicz, Matt Schlitter and Jeff Potter all recorded singles in the inning.
NJIT took the lead for good in the top of the eighth when designated hitter Matt Schlitter hit a single to right field. An error by the right fielder allowed McCain to score and take a 9-8 lead. The Highlanders added another run on a wild pitch by Jason Mulero.
In the bottom of the eighth the Highlanders rallied and posted five runs on five hits. Turner recorded his third RBI of the day when he doubled to left.
Highlander Chris Parenti (3-0) earned the win pitching 3.2 innings striking out three batters. Bill Gleason was credited with the loss allowing seven runs, striking out two and walking one.
The Highlanders will host Nyack College tomorrow at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium at 12pm. The game is second of a three game series.
