Dominican Sweeps Highlanders in Nyack

NYACK, NY - The New Jersey Institute of Technology baseball team lost both games in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference double-header to Dominican College this afternoon. The Highlanders lost the first game 8-1, and fell in the second 15-5.

The Highlanders fall to 9-10 overall, 2-6 in the CACC while Dominican improves to 19-10 overall, 7-1 in the CACC.

In the first game, Dominican jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Tom Keegan led the inning off with a walk, while Peter Gilardo followed with a single to center. Eliezer Nunez hit a two-out RBI single to centerfield, scoring Keegan and Gilardo. With the bases loaded, right fielder Sean Brown hit a hard single threw the infield, recording two RBI's to put the Chargers ahead.

The Highlanders posted their only run of the game in the third inning when junior Derrick McCain hit an RBI single to centerfield scoring Dan Morogiello who led the inning off with a double to right field.

The Chargers added four runs on three hits on two errors in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning to pull ahead of the Highlanders and taking game one 8-1.

McCain led the Highlanders offense hitting 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Morogiello went 1-for-4 with one run.

For the Chargers, Nunez hit 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs while teammate Brown went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Joseph Catanese (2-1) earned the win, while NJIT's Rob Forbes (1-3) was credited with the loss. Catanese pitched six innings allowing only one run. Forbes pitched four innings allowing four runs on four hits and striking out four.

In the second game, the Chargers opened up the game posting three runs on five hits in the first inning.

Dominican added two more runs in the second and another run in the third pulling ahead 6-0. Jose Escalara had a double recording two RBI while teammate Tom Keegan hit a solo homerun over the left field wall in the third.

The Highlanders began the top of the fourth inning off with back-to-back singles by Mike Turner and Rob Forbes. Catcher Matt Schlitter followed with a double in the gap scoring Turner putting the first Highlander run on the board. Senior Anthony D'Agosta stepped up with runners on second and third and hit a hard grounder to the second baseman, recording his third RBI of the season.

The Chargers bats got going again in the fourth, adding seven more runs, making the score 13-2.

NJIT posted two more runs in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third when pitcher Daniel Bucci was called for a balk and then followed with a wild pitch scoring McCain and Turner who singled to right to lead off the inning.

Schlitter led the Highlanders hitting 2-for-3 with one RBI while McCain went 1-for-2 with one run.

Leading the Charger offense was freshman Jose Made hitting a perfect 5-for-5 with four runs and an RBI while teammate Escalera went 3-for-5with two runs and two RBI.

Bucci (4-1) earns the win pitching five innings and striking out seven, while PJ Saporito (1-3) records the loss pitching three innings.

The Highlanders return to action when they host Felician College on Wednesday, April 5th at First Energy Park, in Lakewood, NJ for a 7:00pm start.
