NEWARK, NJ -
New Jersey Institute of Technology pounded out 23 runs and 30 hits--13 for extra bases, including five home runs--in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Post, 14-7 and 9-1, Saturday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Highlanders have won five in a row and seven of the last eight, all in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, raising their CACC record to 9-7 and their overall mark to 16-11. Saturday's doubleheader sweep also lifted sixth-year NJIT head coach Brian Callahan's career win total to 100.
The loss dropped Post to 11-31 overall and 4-13 in the CACC.
The Highlanders belted three home runs, four doubles and a triple among their 18 hits in the opening 14-7 victory. Derrick McCain, Rob Forbes and Rob Pietrocola all blasted homers for NJIT, which put up three runs in the first, three in the second, four in the third and four more in the sixth. Pietrocola and Craig Binkiewicz each had three hits in the game, while five other Highlanders collected two hits apiece. McCain, who also doubled, drove in four runs.
Ryan DePolo was 3-for-4 to lead the 13-hit attack for Post, which scored four runs in the last two innings to close the gap on NJIT. NJIT's PJ Saporito (2-4) was the winning pitcher, as he started and worked into the seventh inning. Matthew Keiser (2-4) was the starter and loser for Post.
NJIT was never threatened in the second game, scoring twice in the first inning and then three runs apiece in the second and third innings. Meanwhile, freshman Chris Parenti tossed a complete-game five-hitter, striking out five, without a walk in upping his record to 4-0.
McCain homered again in the second game, pulling into a tie for the team season lead, with his fourth home run of 2006. Mike Turner also went deep for the Highlanders.
Catcher Jeff Potter was 3-for-3 in the nightcap, including his second triple of the day. Binkiewicz was 2-for-4, putting his season batting average at .500 (34-for-68) and Garrett Hauck also had a pair of hits in game two.
Jordan Klein homered in the fourth inning for Post's only run of the second game. He was 3-for-3 in the game, while Eric Rovinetti had two hits, with the two accounting for all of the Eagles' base hits.
NJIT, which is scheduled to play its next three dates at home in Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, will host Dowling in a 4 pm non-conference game on Tuesday.
