Wilmington Tops Highlanders

WILMINGTON, DE - The New Jersey Institute of Technology baseball team traveled to Wilmington, Delaware today for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference double-header match-up at Stahl Post Stadium. Wilmington swept the Highlanders 3-1, 11-4 respectively.

NJIT falls to 7-7 overall 1-3 in the CACC, while Wilmington improves to 12-8 overall, 3-0 in the CACC.

The Wildcats struck first in the bottom of the first when junior Andy Chunn hit a two-out double to left field scoring two runs.

NJIT returned a run in the top half of the second when lead-off hitter Austin DeRogatis hit a single to left field, while teammate Matt Schlitter looped a single to left moving DeRogatis to third and taking second on the throw. DeRogatis scored on a wild pitch by right hander Joe Matterer.

The Wildcats added one run in the bottom of the fifth on two hits taking a 3-1 lead, and never looked back sealing the game.

For the Highlanders Austin DeRogatis and Matt Schlitter both hit 1-for-3, while Wildcat left fielder Brian Testa went 2-for-3 with two singles.

Senior pitcher Brian Ascolese (1-1) pitched six innings, scattering seven hits and letting up three runs. Ascolese had a season-high nine strikeouts. Joe Matterer (2-1) earns the win pitching a complete game, letting up two hits, one run and striking out eight Highlanders.

Game 2: In game two the Wildcats got off to a quick start just like they did in the first game scoring seven runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the third. Senior Garry Wright hit a grand slam over the centerfield wall, putting the Wildcats up 6-0.

NJIT rallied in the top of the fourth inning when Dan Morogiello laid down a bunt down the third baseline. Shortstop Justin Racz reached on an error by the pitcher and Derrick McCain followed by singling to right field loading the bases for Austin DeRogatis. Wildcats pitcher Kenny McGrady hit DeRogatis walking in the Highlanders first run. Rob Pietrocola and Jeff Potter both hit RBI singles decreasing the lead 7-4.

The Wildcats posted four more runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits and one error, pushing the lead 11-4.

Rookie PJ Saportio (1-2) pitched 4 ½ innings scattering five hits and striking out seven while Kenny McGrady records the win pitching six innings, letting up four hits and striking out seven.

Catcher Jeff Potter hit 2-for-3 with an RBI with a single and a triple, while Garry Wright went 2-for-3 with a double and grand slam.

The Highlanders will host C.W. Post on Tuesday March 28th at Commerce Bank Park in Somerset, NJ for a 4pm start.
