The New Jersey Institute of Technology played host to the Wildcats of Wilmington College today in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Commerce Bank Park, in Somerset NJ. The Wildcats defeated the Highlanders 13-4 improving their record to 10-8, 2-0 in the conference while the Highlanders fall to 7-5, 1-1 in the conference.
The Wildcats got off to a quick jump in the first two innings where they scored eight runs on nine hits and one error, taking an 8-0 lead.
Center fielder Derrick McCain led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a bunt down the third base line. McCain then stole second and third moving into scoring position. Sophomore Mike Turner who had two home runs Wednesday night against Bloomfield hit in the Highlanders first run of the game with an RBI single to left field.
Wilmington added two runs in the top of the sixth on three hits and one run in the top of the seventh, widening the gap 11-1. Steve Spiese and Mike Mundy hit back-to-back doubles to the wall in the seventh.
The Highlanders rallied in the bottom of the ninth scoring three runs and cutting the final score to 13-4. Rookie Garret Hauck reached base on an error by the shortstop, while sophomore Rob Pietrocola followed with a single to right field. Second baseman Matt Schlitter reached on an error by the third baseman scoring Hauck. Freshman designated hitter Chris Bacque hit a two out single to left field scoring two runs. Relief pitcher Mark DiMaio struck out the side to seal the game.
For the Highlanders Bacque hit 1-for-2 with two RBI in the bottom of the ninth, while Wildcat catcher Garry Wright went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Wright had two singles and a double in the win.
Senior Rob Forbes records the loss, falling to 0-2. Wildcat Bret Urban earns the win improving his record to 3-1 pitching eight innings, scattering four hits and striking out eleven.
The Highlanders return to action tomorrow when they travel to Wilmington for a 12pm double-header.
